Heavy Falls May Cause Urban Flooding in Low-Lying Areas: PMD

The Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) has issued an alarming urban flooding warning for several regions, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Punjab, and Balochistan. Unprecedented rainfall has transformed Lahore into an urban swamp today, prompting authorities to issue a fresh weather advisory.

Urban Flooding in Low-Lying Areas The Met Office warns of potential urban flooding in low-lying areas such as Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Attock, Kohat, Peshawar, Bannu, Kark, DI Khan, Kasur, Okara, Kohlu, Sibbi, Barkhan, Zhob, Musakhel, and other regions. Furthermore, hilly areas are at risk of landslides due to heavy rainfall.

Moist Currents from Arabian Sea The current weather pattern indicates moist currents from the Arabian Sea penetrating the upper and central parts of the country. Additionally, moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are reaching the same regions. Simultaneously, a westerly wave is impacting upper and central parts of the country.

Expected Rains and Thundershowers The PMD forecasts rain coupled with thundershowers in various areas, including Kashmir, Gilgit Baltistan (GB), KP, Islamabad, Pothohar region, upper and central Punjab, and Northeast Balochistan today. Moreover, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in central Punjab, Islamabad, Pothohar region, Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during this period.

Temperature in Major Cities This morning, the temperature in major cities was recorded as follows:

  • Islamabad and Quetta: 25 degrees Celsius
  • Lahore: 24 degrees Celsius
  • Karachi: 31 degrees Celsius
  • Peshawar: 28 degrees Celsius
  • Gilgit: 16 degrees Celsius
  • Murree: 14 degrees Celsius
  • Muzaffarabad: 22 degrees Celsius

Monsoon Showers Approaching Karachi Karachi residents are advised to prepare for the upcoming monsoon showers. The PMD’s Sindh Chief Meteorologist, Sardar Sarfaraz, stated that the first spell of monsoon rains is expected to arrive in Karachi by the end of this week.

Rain Forecast for Karachi From July 7 to 8, Karachi will experience isolated light to moderate rains. However, on July 9, some areas of the city can expect heavy downpours. The monsoon system, currently over India, is likely to enter Sindh on the night of July 6 or the morning of July 7, bringing relief from the intense heat with a drop of 1-2 degrees Celsius.

Sea Breeze to Reduce Temperature Currently, a sea breeze is blowing in Karachi, offering some respite from the scorching temperatures.
